grandma says

  • to keep nut bags, these she can use to keep the meat she buys from the supermarket
  • to keep banana peels, these she can use to clean her fake shrub’s leaves
  • to keep vegetable scraps, these she can use as fertilizer for those pots of pepper and peanuts she keeps upstairs on the patio
  • to avoid keeping things wrapped in plastic, plastic is poisonous
  • to avoid becoming vegetarian
  • to tell my parents how good their lives are here, how they have all the food they could want, all varieties, all the nutrients, all the health care, all the tender care, all the family and friends and visitors, all the fruits, all the pastries — a never-ending flow
  • to use orange peels to fend off mosquitos
  • to use toothbrush heads to thread thread through needles
  • to not take out her military uniform, this she will wear when she passes. im startled by way this subject is so abruptly broached, just like i was startled by grandpa’s near perfect translation of vagina
  • to take back as much as I can — underwear, wifi-powered thermal bottles, toothbrushes, soaps, shampoos, fragrances, metal food containers, costco-bags of assorted chocolates, bags of nuts, wash cloths, plastic gloves, blankets, towels, her 10 pound woolen military outer jacket, jars of honey, packets of 米粉
  • to not hold her hand while she’s crossing streets
  • to not wash the dishes
  • to not wash the clothes
  • to not help with pretty much anything, really. i sit and feel useless
  • to look at how well her peppers and peanuts are growing up at the rooftop up at the patio where the sun is good always and where the air is good sometimes (how can we ignore the smog that rises with the morning air and settles heavy with the evening sun?)
  • to look at how well their living spaces are maintained, how much they have
  • to take good care of (x)
